History & Mission

History

ArtWorks was started in 2007 by a group of Chicago artists who passionately believe that the arts can strengthen community. Our workshop facilitators are local artists, including art therapists from Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights and visiting faculty and students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Mission

ArtWorks is dedicated to serving as a bridge between diverse groups of people. Through the arts and cultural exchange, we work toward personal empowerment and meaningful social change. Our aim is to foster the development of understanding and compassion between all members of the community, including those marginalized due to mental, physical, or social differences.

ArtWorks embraces four core values:

  • That democratic negotiation of public space and a shared sense of belonging occur when the perspectives of every member of the community is valued and represented.
  • That everyone has the right to equal representation in the cultural life of the community.
  • That diversity is a positive feature of society that requires care, cultivation, and protection.
  • That cultural and creative expression and exchange are catalysts for meaningful and lasting social transformation.

ArtWorks receives generous in-kind contribution of time and talent from faculty and students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
